Dunton: Dedicated. Determined. & Driven to Declare the Power and Positivity behind Dexterous Quilting

William Rush Dunton Jr. was the founder of the American Occupational Therapy Association. Originally from Pennsylvania, he was also an assistant professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

...Curious what he has to do with quilting?

Throughout his career, William advocated for healing patients through purposeful activities and wrote many articles on the benefits of quilting as a creative and comforting outlet. Dunton encouraged patients to make quilts using bright colors- as he found this eased the nerves of his more edgy clients. William Rush Dunton Jr. believed that cutting and sewing eased the mind and he believed in the calming influence of needlework. Furthermore, Dunton enjoyed the true sense of accomplishment quilting gave his patients.William was also personally passionate about the therapeutic textile art-form and collected quilts himself. He was particularly fond of album quilts from Baltimore, MD. Dunton held 4 quilt exhibits in the Baltimore Museum of Art and he was an honorable member of the Quilters Hall of Fame.
